03/21/10 - Robot Rumble at the Durham Museum of Lkife and Science
The kids and I just love special events at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. Joey, Johnny, Madi and I went to the museum for the annual Robot Rumble today, and boy did we have a great time.

Collage #1 of the Robot stuff is above. Collage #2 of the plants and animal stuff including the new black bear and the hoode merganser is here:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Durham-Museum-of-Life-and/Durham-Museum-of-Life-and/11569516_4mipx#815125438_MqcFr

In the South Gallery, near the main lobby, there were quite a few Lego Mindstorm exhibits. The 537 Hedgehogs from Hillsborough were letting the kids make buttons, pick out a bendy robot man, and play with remote controlled robots. At another table, IBM?, they were showing the kids how to write Mindstorm robot programs, upload them to the robot, and then watch them in action. In this case, the programs were basic things like go straight, turn around, and come back. The kids also watched some older kids demonstrate more sophisticated programs where the robots used light or touch sensors to pick up loops on their 'hands' and navigate obstacle courses. Great stuff!

In the Mercury room behind the front lobby, robot battles were gong on, and other types of robots were on display. The kids enjoyed watching the battles and especially the 'What is a robot?' presentation. We learned that sometimes toys look like robots but are not really robots. The kids thought robots talked, moved, needed batteries, had a computer in them, etc. We got to see what was under the 'skin' of a Furbie, a toy Wall-E, a Lego Mindstorm standing robot, and even a toy version of the robot from Lost in Space. Very informative and fun!

Outside next to the butterfly house, several more exhibits were set up. In one 'pit', two robots battled each other. In another, a high speed robot on 4 wheels that could operate on either side was a thrill as it crashed into boards and flipped through the air. All my kids got a chance to operate that one. They also had a table with robot armlike tongs to give the kids a feeling for how robot arms work. There were even Rock'em Sock'em Robots for the kids to play with. We liked this area so much we had to come back for a second trip!

Last but not least for us today was the robot submarines from iRobot in the pool where the sailboats usually are in Catch the Wind. My kids didn't want in line to use the sub remotes, but we did enjoy watching the other kids operate them. The subs would sometimes pop out of the water and put out a splash of water. Funny!

In other exciting news, there is a new tiny male pig named Auggie in with Miss Piggy. Boy was Auggie cute! Miss Piggy was putting on quite the show today too pushing her green ball around the pen!

We got to see Yona the new bear cub the museum took in as a rescue from off the side of I40 in Tennessee. We spoke with one of the keepers that told us that Yona is a year old. She's learned to kindof leave the other 4 bears in the bear habitat alone and is getting along fine with Gus, the youngest of the adults and the only male. The keeper threw in some apple halves, and we got to see Yona chomp down on that. The other bear in view today was Ursala.

I waited all winter to see and take a picture of a hood merganser, and today was the day! They even came pretty close to the boardwalk area.

We saw Ranger Greg on the boardwalk, and he pointed out a snake sunning itself on a tree branch. We were also amazed at the number of turtles up on logs in the wetlands sunning themselves.

We made a quick trip through the dinosaur trail and fossil pit as well as the inside animal room and taking a peek at the new Contraptions exhibit. But then, in what seemed like a blink of the eye, the day was over and it was time to head home.

5/22 is the Butterfly Bash and 6/12 is the Bubble Blitz, and we look forward to visiting the museum on those days too.

03/20/10 - Forsythia
Another sure sign of spring. Bright yellow forsythia stalks (bushes) reaching for the sky in all their glory.

I'm not totally sure that I'm happy with the focal point being off center, but I was drawn to the diagonal lines of the stalks. Taken at Home Depot while I was picking up my new 500gph pond pump. The employees and some customers in the parking lot were smiling at how I was taking pictures, so I snapped their picture too:-) I try to go with the flow when I get spotted. If it had been a great shot, I'd have posted it, but it turned out ho hum.

Here is the shot I almost posted:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/March-2010/11391408_8boNH#814524278_8ArWY
It's a sunny star magnolia shot from my yard. I kindof figured not different enough from the one I posted 2 days ago although I love the blue tones in the star magnolia shots from yesterday.

So, I did get the pond pump installed. The bell fountain looks and sounds pretty again. I was outside last night with the flashglight enjoying watching the fish and the frogs swim about. Very clean water with the water cycling correctly.

It was so warm here yesterday (high 70s) that Johnny wanted to play in his little pool and water on the back deck. I obliged. I figured when he got cold from the well water he'd ask to dry off:-) I also warned him not to sit down in the pool. He was stubborn:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/March-2010/11391408_8boNH#814291963_evaUc
He actually lasted an hour out there and then came in for popcorn and a movie under his blankie. But boy did he have cold feet!

We will not be past the date of last frost/freeze until 4/15. My fingers are crossed our pretty plants will not get ruined this year.

Robot Rumble today at the museum in Durham. I'll catch up with you guys when I get in front of the TV tonight and am processing the pictures.

Thanks for stopping by to view the cherry blossom shot from yesterday:-)

03/19/10 - Double Weeping Cherry
It was cloudy and dark on my way into work yesterday, and I was so disappointed that it wasn't worthwhile to stop and take any flower pictures. On the way home, it was only slighter better. I had to stop at Home Depot to get suet, and I saw a group of beautiful double weeping cherries next to a fence and got out my camera. This is a vertical 8X10 crop of the original and otherwise SOOC. I fooled around with adjusting the colors some, but I liked the original better. I kindof thought the fence in the background was a different and interesting backdrop.

Glad you all iked and were cheered by the bright daffy from yesterday. Thank you for stopping by to look.

70 and sunny today. How is a person supposed to work at the computer all day?!? But, it is Friday!!!

The boys and I took the screened fabric off our 3 small outdoor ponds after work..a benefit of the time change to have light then. They were thrilled to see goldfish still swimming around underneath. Unfortunately, one pump needs to be replaced. I need a 300-500gph one to run a bell fountain. I guess I get to go back to Home Depot.

HAGD,
Maryann
03/18/10 - Fancy Daffodil
I took this Monday. SOOC, the colors were muted from reality. I adjusted the contrast and color in Picasa with the Lucky button, and this version is a tad bolder than reality...but I like it. Not sure the exact daffodil varity, but this bulb came in one of those bags of mixed daffy bulbs. The blue behind the flower is my storage shed. I have a thing for blue wedgewood, and the shed is painted that color:-) I was down on my knees under a bench trying to line this shot up to get the shed behind the flower.

Well, St. Patrick's Day is over and it will be on to Easter fun now. The leprechaun will come down, and the Easter Bunny will go up. Saturday the kids and I are headed to the Robot Rumble at the museum in Durham too. Can't wait.

Some pictures I took yesterday ended up in my Inspirations album.

Thanks for your comments on my little leprechauns yesterday:-)

03/17/10 - Happy St. Patrick's Day!
OK, THE green day is finally here, and of course I have some green for you. I took this last Friday afternoon when we were setting up for the Shamrock Party, and I just knew this was the one after looking on the computer that night. I must confess that I have only 1 wig, and that I took a picture of Joey and then Johnny (both on the right). When I saw that I'd gotten a nice smile out of both of them, I set out to figure out how to put Johnny in Joey's shot. Hopefully I did a decent job. It's not easy. When I showed Joey later on what I'd done he was like, "HEY! How did you do that?!?" Secrets, Joe, secrets... Actually, I told him it was an eraser tool. Next year...two wigs!

Anyway, last night I decided to see if a border would help. I found a free shamrock scrapbook page, reduced it from 12X12 to 8.5X11 and the rest is history. Boy do I struggle with aspect ratios.

I looked back at our family St. Patrick's Day pictures, and it looks like the leprechaun showed up in 2007:-) He comes back every year too...

Thank you so much fo the comments on my white on white flower:-)

Hope today is a green and festive day for ya!
Maryann
03/16/10 - Star Magnolia
On the way home from Joey's orthodontist appt. yesterday, I stopped to take a few pics. Then, later in the day, I took some more. Although I had lots of blue sky, pink flowers, and perfectly wonderful shots for you from the morning, this late day cloudy and moody shot is the one that I kept coming back to.

These petals do have just a tad of a nice smell. The trees fill with these white blossoms and then leaf out.

The saucer (or tulip) magnolias are also blooming in all their glory now. They look like trees with pink easter eggs sitting up pretty.

Joey is doing good with his braces. He got aqua elastics put on yesterday and was quite the happy camper:

Thanks to those of you that stopped by to look at my collages from the last two days:-)

03/15/10 - Marbles Kids Museum
I gave the boys 3 choices about what to do yesterday, and they easily and jointly decided that Marbles Kids Museum was their choice. At $5 a piece and play as long as they're open, it's one of the most fun and economical places to go in town. It's essentially a hands on play museum. Some of the exhibits are fixed, and then they also do a great job of rotating out a few of the spaces with traveling exhibits and even having impromptu fun activities in the bigger courtyard and lobby areas.

Downstairs, the kids had the usual fun with the fire truck, kitchen area and stage. Then we got to the water area. Notice just how wet Johnny is lower left? Wish I'd gotten the first shot of his face at my reaction. This one is close. I wasn't really mad and he pretended to be sorry. It was cute. One of the staff brought out 30 bubble wands and some bubbles into the courtyard, and the kids had a great time blowing bubbles for about 15 minutes. I had fun taking pics of the bubbles too:-)

Upstairs, we discovered a new 'money' exhibit designed to teach kids about how to save and use a bank. Super new addition to the museum in my opinion. The pig top near center was the hit of the room. The kids would stand under him with buckets, and when he filled with balls, the balls would drop out and the buckets would catch them. Then the kids would run up the stairs to various places around the room and feed the pig. The balls travel on little tunnels back into the top of the pig. Repeat process. Boy did I have fun trying to take pics of the balls dropping down on the kids. Hard shot based on crowd, height of pig, etc. so I switched to a wide angle (tall) shot.

Madi did an excellent job building a little shelf in the tool area upstairs. She bought a little elf from the Christmas clearance area in the gift shop to sit on it.

Another super fun day with the kids! I just couldn't pick again. I think I can promise no collage tomorrow:-)

Also, Johnny was a super great helper in the morning out in the garden with his watering can and shovel, and I have a 3 picture ocllage of that too which is here:
 http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Marbles-Kids-Museum/Marbles-Kids-Museum-031410/11514174_onf8w#810518639_2iosT
A few videos from the museum are just after that picture. Probably the two worth watching is:

03/14/10 - Shamrock Party
I know you all knew this was coming today:-)

Here's a link to another version of the collage that just has the kids (no party favor shots):
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Children/Shamrock-Party-031310/11501226_yrCFw#809515531_KPNaP
The link takes you to the album with the rest of the shots. In 4 hours, I only took 240 shots and only kept 140 of them which tells you just how busy I was keeping up with the kids and the crafts. My camera never left my neck until I got into clean-up mode.

Upper left is lemon cupcakes turned green sitting on my cupcake tree. Going clockwise: Eli, Faith, and Sophie working on decorating cupcakes, the cookies we made using egg yolk with food color to paint before cooking, Sophie really enjoying painting, Christine and Johnny, Madi and the stained glass shamrock craft, the fortune cookies, the hats, and Johnny and the super cute leprechaun socks Aunt Debbie gave him several years ago...so glad they still fit. Center left to right is Johnny, Madi back and Sophie front, Eli, and Joey.

Madi has on a super cute Old Navy shirt that said, "I love' St. Patrick's Day" where love is a shamrock.

It was a smaller than usual but very fun crowd today. Madi and Christine, Faith, Eli and Sophie, and me and J&J. Crafts: Foam handprint beard leprechaun (Oriental), glitter glue shamrock person (Joey created), stained glass shamrock (Michael's), and paint a rainbow which turned into paint yourself:-)

We had pizza, grapes, and chips then green cupcakes and shamrock/dinosaur sugar cookies...the usual these days.

I had gotten these really cool green plastic lucky coins and smaller shamrock duckies (both Oriental), and the kids each got a plastic cup ($1 store Fuquay) to use to hunt for their 'gold'.

For bingo prizes, the kids got green fortune cookies (Oriental) with cool fortunes like, "Wishing You the Luck of the Irish" inside. I really liked those! Have to say that none of mine arrived broken.

We did read a book, but I guess I forgot about 'dancing'. Oh well.

The hats were a hoot. But my favorite was the bow tie. Watch in the first 50 or so shots in the album how it moves from Joey to Madi to Christine and then back to Madi before being set aside.

There may not be any more parties until Johnny's birthday at the end of July, and right this minute I'm a little sad about that. Some of the best days are the days with all these special kids.

Thanks to Christine and Faith for helping keep up with the kids and do the crafts and clean and for taking time out of their weekend to come hang out.

Hope you're having a great Sunday! After warm temps and the sun pushing it's way through yesterday afternoon, it's cooler, cloudy, and sprinkling again. Sigh...

HAGD,

03/13/10 - Leprechaun or Dr. Seuss?
As soon as Joey got off the school bus yesterday, he started helping me and Johnny decorate the garage. Well, he started playing in all the party stuff laying out on the table. I've got, um, a few green hats and some other festive St. Patrick's Day attire. With the big bow, he said he couldn't decide if he was Dr. Seuss or a Leprechaun... The background is a tablecloth I've hung in the garage as a backdrop.

We're pretty set for our guests to arrive at 11. I'm a tad disappointed that we won't have as many kids as usual. We could be down from 10 to 5 today, but I'm hoping for 7. The more the merrier. I've got some fun crafts lined up.

Glad you guys enjoyed the rubber ducks...
