Thanks for stopping by to view my daily photo! I will post a new photo each day to this gallery. Typically, I will post early morning, and the photo will have been taken the day before. Sometimes the photo may be from sometime earlier in the week, but all the pictures posted will be relatively new. I hope you see something that makes you smile. Feel free to leave professionally appropriate comments or to hover over any of the images and give them a thumbs up or down.

I looked out my home office window late afternoon to see this:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/February-2010/11119866_PgrMm#784851650_6GJw5
Photo op! I grabbed the tripod and camera and went out to take some pics even though the light was super low.

I like this one because of the waterdrops and detail on the flower petal. It's also a neat contrast between flower and log.

Thanks for your comments on the haircut picture. I enjoyed all the comments especially the ones where the shot brought back memories for some of you. I was trying to tell a story with that picture. Oh, and just Johnny was pictured. Joey's haircut was at dusk in the same spot, and I did not get any pics of the inprogress work with him. It was a before I started cutting, during the cut, and after it was done trio of Johnny. Not the first haircut shots I have of the boys from over the years either;-)

Thanks too to those of you that left Joey a comment. He was thrilled and motivated. Here's a new POTD from Johnny in the kids' album:

fotomom > 02/09/10 - Ears!
To my dismay, the boys needed haircuts again. The need comes back around more quickly than I'd like given our busy schedule. I don't have any background in cutting hair AT ALL, but somehow when they were little I decided to give it a try and have been doing it ever since. We tried a real haircut place one time a couple of years ago, which was OK, but then went back to me doing it. I'm sure when they get a little older they'll be asking to go to a real barber. For now, this is fine.

I hope you all get a little bit of a chuckle out of this since we're doing it on the back deck. It's cold out there in the winter, and you can't exactly bundle because of the cut hair getting on whatever you're wearing. The deal is, I cut, then I get out the leaf blower! I used to do this in the bathtub and it's just a lot of needless mess to clean up!

I didn't get a chance to take many pictures, for me, yesterday, so you get an 'action' shot today.

Joey begged me for his own POTD gallery, so I gave in and created one. For 7, he seemed pretty serious about it. His shot today is pretty cute:

When he, Madi, or Johnny have something worth posting, I'll add it. LightningFastJoey is his Webkinz sign-on:-) I am working on basics like moving the tripod left/right and up/down, checking if the exposure is OK, zoom in/out, and framing his shot.

Glad you got a kick out of the McNuggets:-)

fotomom > 02/08/10 - There's Always One in Every Crowd
Yesterday was one of those days where I shot pictures that spanned at least 4 distinct subjects. That made it super hard to choose which shot to post today.

I probably really need to redo this shot and try to get it just a tad more focused, but I decided to go with it anyway. The outter edges have been cleaned up as well as a few dust specks on the mirror. Also a crop. Joey and Johnny helped me shoot this one and more in the series, and that makes it special on top of how it turned out otherwise. Mike Varona gets some credit too for his series with Sonic and Domo inspiring me to get out some of the kids' toys and play some more. Do you know what these are? ...drum roll... McDonald's chicken nuggets:-)

I also shot more of the blue bubble vase in my kitchen window considering that for the Dgrin window/door challenge, but did not go with that one.

Joey and I worked on a 100 shirt for a school project. Basically, we had to somehow send in 100 of 1 or more somethings that he could count for the class. One of the ideas was to decorate a shirt. It gave me a chance to give him his first sewing lesson. I think the shirt came out pretty neat!

If you haven't started on your Valentine's Day card(s), it's time:-)

The boys' classroom cards are ready to go to school. Johnny's were actually due today. We worked really hard to write the classmate names on them and decorate the envelopes of the picture cards.

The boys and I did watch about an hour of the Superbowl. We had nachos and laughed our heads off at the Career Builder commercial where everyone was in their underwear:-)

Thanks for your comments on the Yates Mill water shot. I wanted to go back yesterday and take some more while the blue sun was beautiful in the sky, but we just couldn't fit it in.

fotomom > 02/07/10 - Yates Mill Spill Dam
I finally made it over to Yates Mill with the photo contest entries yesterday. The reception to find out the winners is 2/19, and the kids and I will go check out the rest of the artwork that was submitted then.

I just couldn't help but walk over to the mill while we were there even though it was totally cloudy only about 35 out and a bit windy. The water coming over the spill dam was about as forceful and big in volume as I'd ever noticed...pretty. This picture is a close-up of part of the spill damn wall. You can see that there is a lot of water. Last summer, we were down to just a trickle of water coming over the wall. Huge difference!

I reached after I got home, and we're 7.43 inches of water above normal for the last 90 days than usual. Wow! Maybe thta will mean a summer without constant water restrictions and fears of wells drying up.

If you'd like to see a video of the spill dam and hear the thundering of water coming over it yesterday, that's here:

Thank you for your comments on my cute heart girl from yesterday...

fotomom > 02/06/10 - My what a big heart you are...
A glass Valentine's Day style figurine I've had for some time. Could it be 30+ years old? It was not an expensive piece...maybe a $1...but I can't remember the exact origins except that I carefully unwrap her every Valetine's Day and put her on display.

The lit up heart is from a string of lights on my mantle that came from ACMoore a few years ago.

There is a bit of pp to pull this off;-)

For Joda because it's red. For Carole because her Valentine's Day shots triggered me to get busy.

Thank you so much for your kind works on my chickadee photo. I am going to try to capture the Hairy Woodpecker at the suet next if I can.

Joey has a snow make-up day today. Yep, on a Saturday. BUT, they get out at 12:30.

fotomom > 02/05/10 - Posing!
I was just saying yesterday that the Black Capped Chickadee was on my list of birds to get a good picture of...
From the time I got woke up yesterday to the sound of happy chirping birds until sundown last night, there was a lot of bird activity in my yard. You'll laugh, but every time I went into the master bathroom, I'd end up running for my camera. This is a result of one of those times. This chick is in my favorite camellia tree just outside the master bathroom window. You might remember me saying that this bush is extra tall due to the dryer vent being right under the window. I think all the extra warm air in winter really helps. Anyway, I had seen the Titmice in the tree and the Carolina Wrens and then all of a sudden this guy. I fired off about 150 shots before he was gone. And, ya know what? The last shot was the best shot.

This is a cropped version although he was quite close. There was a blurred dark leaf lower left that just had to go. But, I got into an interesting discussion last night with a friend about just the right way to crop this picture. Seriously, 10 versions later, I'm going with this one. The dark leaf, his stance on the branch, his placement in the shot all made for a not entirely straight forward crop.

RE the reference to Joey's eye yesterday... Just a follow-up from the sledding accident on Saturday. Sunday's POTD talked about it. Sorry for any confusion. He took a hard hit to his left cheekbone which is of course very close to his eye and his eye socket was very swollen.

Madi and Joey both received the Character Kid award at school yesterday for Self Discipline and doing the right thing even when others aren't. We were all very proud of them, and I took their picture with their awards which is here:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/February-2010/11119866_PgrMm#781308328_WeVJp
I did a stylized version with Madi in red and Joey in blue too that's a few thumbnails over. Remember Madi is K and Joey is 1st (6 and 7 respectively).

Thanks for your comments RE Joey in the old house window.

fotomom > 02/04/10 - Who Goes There?!?
I took Joey to get his eye checked out yesterday. Everything is fine...no injury to the eye itself...just his face. Mom is relieved. His face is looking MUCH better.

After a dreadful hour wait between drops in to dilate and the recheck, I had to take a half day of vacation, so I stopped to take a few pics on the way home...no need to rush at that point.

This is a rundown old house a mile or so away from my house. I've taken pics here before. A lock high up on my most popular photos is from this house. Anyway, since I only had Joey with me, I let him get out and come with me...and we went in. The floor was mostly stable except for the exposed front porch area that we had to traverse. He was all about trying to be a prop in my shots. Most of the times he is a quite willing subject. He thought the milk jug on the old kitchen counter was ghostly. He was talking up a storm. Pointing out this and that. I was taking my pics and trying ot keep him safe.

This has had a bunch of PS to it including Coffee Shop's Moody Action and a Find Edges filter. I removed CHAMPION in red off Joey's sweatshirt. The sunglasses are what the eye doc gave him. I'm not sure I came out of this with anything more than some neat texture and a boy in a window, but you tell me. There are shots of him in the doorway and some other neat ones here:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/February-2010/11119866_PgrMm#780537905_JyqmH

Any tips on how to turn some pics of this house into real pieces of art would be appreciated. Honest, I have trouble doing dark... Go figure!

The kids are on a 1-hour delay. Will they ever get back to their normal schedule?!? I think there's more black ice today than yesterday, so it's probably actually needed. Sigh...

I got the Valentine's Day cards for the kids created and sent yesterday using Wal-Mart's templates. No time to mail order. Johnny's are due Monday for some reason.

Johnny enjoyed your comments on his cuteness:-)

fotomom > 02/03/10 - Johnny Valentine's Day Portrait
I did Valentine's Day portraits for Joey, Johnny, and Madi last night. Talk about some fun! I'll be picking the best of each of the kids and priting out cards for them to hand out at school. I may add a frame...we'll see.

I love Johnny's expression in this shot. I just wish his left hand was down a bit not blocking the monkey bears face. Oh well...I'll take the smile:-)

MANY more versions, too many, in my February 2010 album. Here's my favorite of Madi:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/February-2010/11119866_PgrMm#779852319_UGSbN

Wishing for some real portrait lighting equipment... This was done on my kitchen/dining table with a tablecloth for the backdrop hung over the French Doors to another part of the house. Kitchen table light and/or working type Halogen and/or flash were used on the shots. Really could have used a larger backdrop and better lights for sure.

See...not a snow picture today:-)

The kids are out of school for the 3rd day straight:-( It's raining. It's not that cold.

fotomom > 02/02/10 - The Snowman Crew
Left to right back is Joey, Marrah, Faith (Eli's mom), and Christine (Madi's mom)
Left to right front is Dillon, Madi, Eli, and Johnny

I was back outside with he kids again yesterday morning for the 3rd day straight. We definitely made the most of the white stuff we were lucky to get. The kids sledded, had a snow ball fight from one side of the driveway culvert to the other, and then we built the snowman. Before you laugh at his size, that took us 30-40 minutes to build. The 'snow' is a sheet of frozen ice, so we got big chunks of the ice and we worked to mold it into what you see here using our hands and buckets of water. It wasn't easy. I so wish we could have rolled big balls like usual, but that wasn't working.

For most, this was their first snowman, and they were just thrilled, so we did good.

Cloudy today with rain moving in and much warmer temps. The kids are still out of school, but mom is back to work today and our fun in the snow for this round of precip is most done. The great meltdown is underway. The ice on the road where we sledded the first two days has left patches of asphalt.

Thanks for all your comments about my sledding collages and snow shots. This was a super big deal for kids and mom alike. I can now count this winter a success since we had our fun in the snow.

Late notes:
1. Yes, there were a few extra carrots and it was lunchtime and we'd been playing for 3.5 hours so the kids were eating the snowman's spare noses:-)
2. Madi's pink hat. My striped scarf. Flat glass marbles for buttons. Walnuts for the mouth and eyes. Joey got privet branches covered in ice for the eyebrows.
3. I fired off 30 shots to try to ensure that I had one where everyone was looking. No clue until I actually looked on the computer. And ya know what? It wasn't until #30 that I actually had eye contact from everyone. Most shots I had 6/8 or 7/8. Finally on lucky #30 8/8. They were all laughing at the # I was taking, but I go t my shot! I think for every person you add to a group shot the difficulty level goes up exponentially:-)
