09/12/10 - Heroes and Villains Oh My!
The boys and I had a super time at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham yesterday for their yearly event Heroes, Villains, and Special Effects. As you can see, there were many Star Wars characters on hand for the kids to pose with. I love seeing adults get into the act like this! The Carolina Garrison did a great job!
We were especially thrilled to see the pink droid, R2-KT, for the first time. She was built by some very loving people for a little girl, Katie Johnson, who had cancer. Although Katie is no longer with us, her memory lives on as R2-KT visits other sick children and helps raise funds for those in need. If you're interested in reading more about how she is used to help kids, you can go to her home page:
Highlights of the Day:
Lots of characters and short and orderly lines to get to pose with them. Joey had a smile from ear to ear the entire time and was more than ready to pose. Johnny decided this year he was afraid of Stormtroopers, but he was NOT afraid of Darth Vader or any of the other characters except the Emperor's Royal Guard (all red costume). We were obviously able to work around that! Joey and Johnny got to talk to the man that built the R2-D2 unit and to hold the radio remotes for both. They were good and did not send the working droid units out into the crowd...whew. Mom is liking the 'blue' woman costume for Halloween:-) We saw great butterflies both outside and inside at the Butterfly House. The Black Bears were really enjoying the cooler temps, and Gus and Yona were wrestling with each other in their yard. That sure was fun to watch! We found several shark teeth in the fossil pit. We had a lot of fun building with a new friend in the Contraptions exhibit. At the very end of the day, I let the boys visit the outside water play exhibit, and as expected, they got drenched. Johnny was doing his I'm delighted giggle over and over and over again. Fun! Chinese Buffet sure hit the spot on the way home!
I put up a gallery just for this event, and on the last page, there is a collage of the best butterfly shots:
I also posted a blog post about the day here:
Thank you all so much for your show of support yesterday on my FOTOMOM license plate. Wow! I was watching from the museum a few times and smiling.
