My Best Daily Shots

Thanks for stopping by to view my daily photo! I will post a new photo each day to this gallery. Typically, I will post early morning, and the photo will have been taken the day before. Sometimes the photo may be from sometime earlier in the week, but all the pictures posted will be relatively new. I hope you see something that makes you smile. Feel free to leave professionally appropriate comments. Here's a link to the SmugMug Daily Community.

09/07/09 - The boys and I went to a local private zoo yesterday called Noah's Landing. This place is all about hands-on learning and interaction with the animals. The NC Wildlife Rescue Center out of Sandford was onsite with some of their rescue birds, and this Great Horned Owl was amongst them. I've only ever seen a Great Horned Owl in the wild once, and that was just a silhouette on a power line, so I was ecstatic to get to see one THIS CLOSE.

The boys and I had a superb time. We got to touch an alligator, skunk, opossum and more. We will go back!

I put up a blog post about our visit here:
http://maryanng.blogspot.com

Besides the great horned owl, they had a red-tailed hawk, a black vulture, a screech owl, and a barred owl. Wow!

Thank you all so much for receiving my black swallowtail picture so well yesterday:-) I took a picture of a red-spotted purple yesterday on the way to Noah's Landing, and that just might be tomorrow's POTD.

I hope you are enjoying the holiday!
• 09/20/09 - I took a few flower pictures yesterday despite the clouds. This flower bloomed a few weeks ago on my local 'swamp' road. It's all over the place on other roads too. I believe it to be:
Tickseed-Sunflower (coronata)
Whatever it is, it sure is pretty...summer's fleeting yellow as fall settles in.

My trip to the mall yesterday was a tad frustrating. So, we won't talk about that! I shot motion yesterday, I tried to shoot more glass, I just was having a day.

Thanks for all your comments on the pumpkin picture. At least that gave me something to smile about:-)

Have a great Sunday!
• 09/19/09 - OK, it's too early for Halloween too, but after the red and green yesterday, I'm trying to compensate:-) This is a sooc shot. The pumpkin is a piece of foam. I wish there was a tad of green in the lower right, but other than that, it turned out about how I'd envisioned. I can see there are going to be more of these as I have many other Halloween 'characters' to choose from and Joey is excited to help try to do them.

There are many other variations here:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Art/Glass-Appeal-20/9678703_m85Uj#653792787_xAbFn
with the link taking you to a spookier one. I shot over 200 pics trying to get one that was 'just right' again.

The kids and I are headed to the mall today, and yes, I'll be sneaking my camera around taking some pictures. Cary Towne Center has an inside carousel, and that's one of my targets for some motion.

We might see sun on Sunday...PLEASE.
We've had clouds for a few days, and it looks like we're going to have clouds for a few more days...sigh. Virtually no rain...just clouds and sprinkles. So, you all know what that means...glass shots! Yep, and that's just what I did. Now, I don't know why I ended up choosing red and green and coming out with a Christmas looking print, but that's what happened.

It made Joey's day seeing his POTD and all your great comments. Thank you.
• 09/17/09 - Joey was a bit bummed that Johnny made my daily on Tuesday and he did not, so... Although I didn't get the lighting and sharpness just right in this one, I decided to post it 'cause I sure did get the smile right. I had both kids on the kitchen table last night posing with their 'loveys'. Joey has had Lovey the Lion and Blankie since he was born, and even though he's going on 7 in October, he's still VERY fond of them. They stay in his bed, but he has to have them to go to sleep. No small feat keeping up with these guys for 7 years I gotta tell ya!

You'll notice he has on his Mario PJs;-) For those of you that gamed in a prior lifetime, Mario is alive and well with the next generation of kids too.

Johnny with all his cuteness is posing with his Star Teddy here:
He's got on Scooby PJs:-)

The darn central NC forecast looks like rain and clouds for a week:-( Looks like more glass shots on the way!

Thank you for sharing my excitement and enthusiasm over the GBH shot:-)
• 09/16/09 - OK, finally, the Great Blue Heron picture that I took at the wetlands area of the Durham Museum of Life and Science last Saturday. I watched this guy and the Green Heron for about 20 minutes and took about 200 photos. It was quite a thrill. The museum has a water table that the kids can play in right behind the area where I was shooting from, so while they were soaking themselves I was happily snapping away:-) I ended up posting the one that I took when the clouds went in for a minute...less glare. This guy was putting on quite a show stalking fish of which I saw him successfully nab several. Usually I see him when we go ot the museum, but he was much closer on our last visit than usual, so I was thrilled.

Thanks for stopping by to check out Johnny in all of his Mario cuteness yesterday. Yes, they were back in their costumes last night and I was back taking more pictures of them:-) The busy 3 month end of the year season is officially kicked off for us whether it's 10/1 or not:-)

Hope you all have a great day...
• 09/15/09 - Mario
Today was going to be a great blue heron shot from the museum. But, when you take a picture of your kid that looks like this, it kindof trumps a heron:-)

In case you can't keep the boys straight, this is Johnny age 5.

First off, the boys and I love Halloween. The kids are already asking me to start getting out the decorations...and there are many. Second, We had been looking at costumes in a magazine, and the boys had pretty much instantaneously picked out Mario and Luigi. It was so convenient that they didn't fight over who would be who. I was surprised that Joey wanted to be Luigi and not Mario. Third, we were in WM (Wal-Mart) on Sunday and oh my but they had the exact costumes in their newly put out Halloween stuff. And, they had 1 of each of the right sizes for the boys. How lucky was that?!? If I ever say that life is a real downer, do remind me that sometimes I get lucky and things go great. Now, I would like to think that I could have tucked them away until mid October or something, but the boys were asking me every 5 minutes to try them on, and I couldn't resist a photo shoot. In my house, a photo shoot constitutes entirely clearing the kitchen table (no small feat) and letting the kids do funny poses on top of the table. (And, yes, we have a lot of kids' books! At least 3000.).

Maybe the GBH (great blue heron) will go up tomorrow...
• 09/14/09 - This is a green heron. He was hanging out eating fish near the lower boardwalk at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham on Saturday. I've seen a green heron at this wetland area 2 or maybe 3 summers in a row now and have taken pictures. It's always very exciting to see and take pictures of this beautiful bird, and this weekend was just the greatest because he was feeding so close (15' - 20-). This green heron will probably migrate farther south soon to somewhere along the Gulf Coast or even into Mexico. I've never seen one at the museum wetlands in the winter.
• 09/13/09 - If I tell you that we had a great time at the Heroes and Villians event at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham yesterday I know you'll believe me;-) Just in case you aren't a huge Star Wars fan, this is Princess Leia posing with Joey, Madi, and Johnny (Left to right). Neat staircase effect as Joey is 7, Madi 6, and Johnny 5 (well nearly). Joey was here with me this morning and we flipped to post the shot of them with Darth or Leia. Leia won.

I probably took the best Great Blue Heron AND Green Heron shots that I've ever taken in the museum wetlands area yesterday. But, yesterday was about the kids, and herons can wait until tomorrow.

Glad you guys liked the pink morning glory. Thanks for visiting my daily and giving me feedback.

After 7 hours at the museum plus 2 hours on the road and everything else yesterday I could use a little rest today. Instead, I'm sure we'll be as busy as usual. I was working so hard on my blog post of the event last night, but I fell asleep sitting up with my laptop in my lap twice on the loveseat. Finally I finished and went to bed.
• 09/12/09 - I really struggled to pick which pink morning glory flower picture to post today. I guess that's a good problem, though. I went with this one because I thought you guys might like how the early morning light is shining in from the left side of the frame. Plus, I do think that's a new blossom getting ready to open in the upper left, and I thought that was kindof neat. Anyway, see what you think. It was a tough choice for me not to go with a full frame flower shot and to do something off center:-)
today for their Heroes and Villians event. I more affectionately refer to today as Star Wars day since R2D2 and Darth Vader will be there. Our little girlfriend Madi is going with us, the weather should be perfect, and I am so excited to be with the kids and not working today.

Thank you looking at and commenting on my glass shot from yesterday. Your encouragement and support is a great motivator to continue to try new things and to always do my best work.
• 09/11/09 - I wish I had a patriotic type portrait to post this morning, but I don't. I was on business in Phoenix on 9/11, and I remember how scary it was to be away from my home during such an uncertain time. To get back to NC, a group of coworkers and I DROVE. I have a series of pics I took out the car window from that one...no time to stop.

It was cloudy in NC yesterday. I did go out and take a round of morning glory shots. I intend to do that this AM too. Sun...PLEASE. Maybe tomorrow you'll get a pink flower:-) Today is another glass abstract that I took earlier this week but held back until I was done with the Noah's Landing bird pics. If you look carefully at this one, you can see lots of small geometric sun shapes. I intentionally went with the orange colored beads because I saw the little suns in the pattern of this piece of glass. I hope you like.

I finally have a Best Of glass album:
http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Art/Glass-Appeal-The-Best/9510694_B6ZuA#638968687_NTwnM
I really need to print off 4X6 prints of the ones I think I want to show in November at the coffee shop so I can make my final selection. At least it will be easier to do now.

I'm in the process of uploading all the NC Zoo pics I've taken since Joey was born in 2002. That's a lot of pictures! Looking back at baby Johnny pictures last night made me smile at how cute he was and be sad at the same time about how much time has past and how fast they are growing.
• 09/10/09 - Molly
One last bird shot from Noah's Landing... I'm not sure what type of bird Molly is, but she sure was a character talking up a storm and nudging folks for a pet. Unlike the other birds in my dailies this week, she's a resident of the facility. I like how she posed so pretty for me in front of the beautiful light.

Thank you all for your super supportive and kind words yesterday. The S3 does not matter. Gotcha! Thank you again.

Ophelia is now #4 on my most popular photos:-) Some day soon I hope to make it down to Charlotte to go to the Carolina Raport Center. I always wanted to go there. Maybe I can make it a reality over the year end holiday break.

I am now on a mission to bring you guys the best pink morning glory shot I can take! I took a bunch yesterday morning after hunting around for that color (harder to find for some reason). I want to take several more mornings worth of shots and then pick the best to post. I came so close to a fire ant mound yesterday. Must be careful!
• 09/09/09 - Ophelia the Barred Owl
I just felt like Ophelia would be left out if I didn't post her picture today:-) I did shoot 200 cardinal pictures yesterday...a female and a male juvenille, but it was low light and through a window and just not the quality I want to share. I also took a few abstract glass shots last night. But, in the end, Ophelia won the POTD slot. I believe the rescue folks said she had both wing and vision issues.

Yes, I shoot all my pics with a Canon Powershot S3...a point and shoot. I have a Canon SX10 IS which I pull out on occassion, but I much prefer the S3 for sharpness of detail. There are a number of reasons I use the S3: 1. Weight of the camera on my neck/back and arms is less. 2. Fear of messing up the threads on real lenses. 3. Cost. 4. I do some crazy things with my camera like take canoe rides with a 4 and 6 year old. 5. The flip LCD which I use OFTEN is a must have for me. You know, the S3 just works for me:-) Hopefully you won't think less of my pictures now that you know... I wasn't hiding it per say, but I wasn't bragging about it either;-)

Thanks for all your wonderful comments on the last two bird pictures. As always, I thank you for checking out my POTD. There are a lot of great pics on SmugMug, and I enjoy looking at everyone else's pics too!
• 09/08/09 - Stare Down
This is another picture from our trip to Noah's Landing on Sunday. This is a red-tailed hawk. Although it appears that he is staring at me pretty intensely, he was actually just hanging out on his perch checking things out and enjoying the pretty day. If you missed me saying, the owl from yesterday and this hawk today are rescues...unable to be out in the wild due to injuries of some sort.

One of the things that I've learned is not to throw apple cores or banana peels out of the car (not that we did this anyway). The things that owls and hawks feed on are attracted to the food, and that has the possibility of taking these beautiful birds unsafely close to traffic.

I was about 3-4' away from each of the birds as I photographed them. There was a rope keeping everyone a safe distance from their perches. I have more close-ups than body shots because of all the background clutter and trying to keep the shots somewhat looking natural.

We went to the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh yesterday. There's a write-up about that at:

http://maryanng.blogspot.com
It was fun and I did take some nice pics...just nothing topping me wanting to share this picture with you. Plus, it was cloudy and rainy all day yesterday in central NC. There's a traditional Joey and Johnny in front of the T-Rex skull shot:-)

At least it's a short work week...
Have a great day!
• 09/06/09 - The boys and I went to town to run a few errands yesterday afternoon, and I got the idea that I'd like to swing into our local hometown garden center The Garden Hut. It's one of those places that has super cool garden plants and STUFF. Of course it's expensive, though. We were enjoying looking when I noticed this black swallowtail butterfly on some nearby butterfly bushes, so I went closer and immediately started taking pics. I have tons of yellow tiger swallowtail butterfly pics in my galleries but few black swallowtail ones, so I was really happy about this. Anyway, he was quite willing to be photographed, and I took a bunch, but I think this is the best one.

The Durham Bulls won last night. I took tons of pics. They are on my HD, but that's as far as I've gotten so far since we came in at 11:30PM.
• 09/05/09 - Well, in this case, the 4th time was the charm. After 3 days of trying to get a 'just right' purple moring glory picture, I still wasn't happy. So, I went out early this morning with Johnny and tried ONE MORE TIME. I thanked Johnny for being my good luck charm and helping me to take this picture which I am finally happy with.
Yesterday when I was near the swamp, I saw a turkey vulture on top of one of the big dead trees where the hawk usually hangs out. I know some folks don't care for those birds, but I think they serve a useful purpose in nature and are pretty neat. This one had a real personality, and he fanned his wings out for me several times and let me get as close as the tall tree would allow. Here's the best shot I got of him:
• 09/04/09 - I believe this to be another morning glory. It was taken in the same area that I took the blue morning glory flower picture a few days ago...not far from my usual swamp spot. The road down to the swamp is lined with morning glories right now. It is so beautiful! I'll be going back this morning to try to get a good picture of the purple color that is also growing in that area.

In hindsight, I would have removed that leaf at the top. Oh well. Speaking of shots with dark backgrounds...
I am glad you all enjoyed the purple flower from yesterday. Thanking you for taking time out of your day to look at it.
• 09/03/09 - This wildflower is a Maryland Meadow Beauty. It is growing on the far side of the swampy area that I often visit. Yesterday I put on tall 'water' boots and walked around to the backside of the swamp to get this shot (and many others). I took many pictures at ground level where it was growing and then picked this flower and held it up to the sky to take another series of shots. I liked the bold blue and purple in this picture, so I decided to use this one for my POTD. I've been trying to get a good shot of this flower all summer! There are only a few locations nearby that I know of where it is growing.
• 09/02/09 - Not Quite Full
Tuesdays are the most hectic day of my week. On top of the usual, the boys and I went to an orientation at Johnny's preschool last night making it even more hectic. So, it was 9PM and no pics:-( The boys and I were commenting about how pretty the moon was on the way home. It's so rare for them to be out when it's dark. So, I was inspired to come home and take a pic of it. I didn't have the energy to be creative enough to take any glass shots, and you guys could probably use a break from the glass anyway.

This picture is cropped, however, if you want to see an 80x digital zoom version that is darn near almost as sharp as this one, that's here:
There are some great pics out on SmugMug. I really enjoy being part of this community. You guys rock!
 • 09/01/09 - Well, it did rain all day yesterday. So, I took more glass shots last night for my POTD. I don't think the sun is supposed to be out today either:-( I intentionally picked an image today that is off center. Just like a flower, sometimes the best crop is not a center crop. I was thinking that sometimes life feels a little off kilter too. The little bubbles in this glass remind me of a fish...in a pretty sort of way.

I hope you have a great day, and thanks for much for your support during my on-call week. Every time I would get frustrated stuck at my computer on a call, I'd look at the SmugMug dailies, and it would cheer me up.
