04/18/10 - Paulownia Tree, Empress Tree, Dragon Tree or Royal Paulownia
This tree is a springtime favorite of mine here in NC. You'll rarely see it in people's yard, but it naturally lines the highways just like Redbuds do. Just about when we lose the Redbud color and they are done for the spring, this tree blooms. It grows to 30' maybe with a wide span. Beautiful nut-shaped seed pods form after the bees pollinate the flowers. The very unusual thing about this is that the branch tips point up and the flowers flow down. A bit like the wisteria flower only the flower is on the firm branch.
Taken at the Haw River canoe launch on Hwy. 64 approaching Asheboro. Very partly cloudy conditions. I've saturated it a bit.
Right now, I think I'll be in Monroe one more night. Lots to do on a weekday, so I'll try to do what needs doing Monday AM. Dad looked great when we got there yesterday. I think seeing grandkids will do that to a Poppop. Later in the day he was quite tired and a bit confused again. He's insisting he's ready to go home and not prepared to deal with the fact that he's going to need some inhome care at the very least. Trying to take one day at a time. Will see what the doc and social worker say tomorrow.
Saw two deer out Dad's kitchen window this AM:-)
Cleaned house and sorted papers until 2AM and then slept on a full bed with 2 kids the rest of the night. I need energy.
