Before I talk about this photo, I need to share that I was at the ER for 4 hours today. One minute Joey, Johnny and I were feeding the ducks and geese at Lake Wheeler Park like we've done many times before. The next minute Joey and I had been bitten by fire ants. Best as I could count, Joey had 10 bites on his left foot. I knew he was gonna be miserable, but I didn't realize just how much. I poured ice cold water on the bites and dried his foot and applied a Benadryl gel pen I had in the minivan. We headed for the nearest drugstore for some oral Benadryl. By the time I was at the drugstore, he had bumps all over his body, his eyes were swelling shut, and he was coughing up a storm. I seriously debated if he could walk in the store or not and whether I could get to the nearby fire station for EMS help. I decided to try to get the Bendadryl, and he was able to walk in. I paid and got the Benadryl in him and we headed for the pediatricians office while I called them to see what they wanted me to do. He was coughing a lot but breathing reasonably well. They said to head straight for the ER and that it sounded like he'd need IV steroids. That was going to be another 15 minute drive:-( Gotta love it when the nurse tells you to stay calm and that if his breathing gets too labored to pull over and call for an ambulance. Well, we made it to the ER OK, and they took us right away. The Benadryl had started to help by then, and they got him on the IV. Great nurse for doing it pain free I must say! The swelling and bumps (hives) went down, and 4 hours later we left with an EpiPen and some other prescriptions. Not the way I intended to spend my Saturday. I am constantly reminded that it only takes a few seconds to alter the course of your life shortterm or even longterm. I know some of you know this lesson all too well too. Thanks for listening. I'm still in adrenaline mode. I am so glad Joey is back home and doing so much better. What a scare! Oh, and yes, I do have ER pics... http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/August-2009/9303816_iSKg7#627107669_BYpBP and the next one.
This picture of Johnny was taken yesterday on a grocery shopping trip. He was the cutest and sweetest shopper ever. He'd never tried a small cart before. You can see he liked it. He kept telling me how much fun he was having and that he loved me. He didn't bump anyone or anything. He was just perfect on this trip. Way fun for mom and a cute pic too. The women store employees at the deli and checkout were pretty taken with him:-)
