04/29/10 - Mr. Bluebird
I took this shot of the Mr. Bluebird yesterday. If you'd like to see his mate, a picture of Mrs. Bluebird is here:
She is not as blue, but I still find her beautiful. Interesting watching this nest and both parents working hard to bring bugs to the babies.
I continue to experiment with setting the exposure on the 40D. I keep having to get out the manual:-) But, I feel like I'm making progress each day. I have the camera creating both jpg and cr2 files. This is the jpg version edited for contrast, sharpened, and cropped from a horizontal shot to a vertical 8X10. I tried to get the raw file to look this good 3 times. Came close but still liked this version better. It's a struggle for me to figure out what's natural vs. what looks best. With this guy, though, he is pretty much really that super blue!
Bluebird babies fledge in 17-21 days, so I figured that next Thursday is the last day I can be guaranteed that they will still be in the box. I will definitely try to get another shot of the babies next week. By then there will be a lot more dark blue on their wings with white speckles mixed in.
To answer billiejean, yes, the rat snake could pose a harm to the bluebirds. The pole this box is on has been designed to discourage snakes. My fingers are crossed that he does not bother the box.
If you ever need a good quality bluebird box, I highly recommend the one in this picture. Don't buy from a specialty bird store, though. You will pay waaaaay too much. Go here instead:
And no, I don't get a commission:-)
Thanks for the feedback on yesterday's daily, and glad you are enjoying watching the babies grow.
